Audiences may have enjoyed it more than the critics did, but it wasn’t like general audiences left the theater buzzing about the experience and dying for a follow-up. And it crossed $1 billion back when only five other movies had done so. The film was pretty leggy, earning $334 million domestic off a $116m weekend for a 2.87x multiplier. And it was the first major live-action 3D blockbuster coming on the heels of Avatar.īut reviews were terrible, and the audience buzz was, well, it was fine.
It was directed by Tim Burton and came out at the moment when a generation that grew up with Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas had young kids of their own to bring to the theater on opening weekend. It starred Johnny Depp (somewhat in his prime as a draw) and Anne Hathaway among other “I know who that is!” movie stars. It was a (then unique) live-action variation on an animated classic.
It was a mega-blockbuster release at the beginning of March. Lots of people saw Alice in Wonderland back in March of 2010.
